1979/80 Rare Original Helmet Jean-Pierre Jabouille GPA

JEAN-PIERRE JABOUILLE
Original Renault Formula One Helmet, circa 1979–1980
GPA, with integrated race radio system

A striking and highly evocative original racing helmet worn in period by Jean-Pierre Jabouille during Renault’s pioneering turbocharged Formula One era, circa 1979–1980. Finished in Jabouille’s iconic livery of vivid red with a central white longitudinal stripe and blue lower band, the helmet is emblazoned with period-correct elf Renault elf visor branding—synonymous with Renault’s factory team during one of the most transformative chapters in Grand Prix history.

Manufactured by GPA (Groupe de Protection Automobile), the helmet retains its original form and fittings, including the integrated wired radio communication system, a rare survival that underscores its direct competition use. The visor, lightly tinted in blue, bears the GPA mark and remains intact, while the shell displays honest signs of race wear—minor scuffs, marks, and patina consistent with authentic track use.

The left side features a “Giacobazzi – Lambrusco di Sorbara” sponsor decal, further anchoring the helmet in its precise historical and commercial context. The interior remains complete, with original lining and fittings preserved, offering a compelling glimpse into late-1970s driver equipment and ergonomics.

Accompanied by a period image depicting Jabouille in the Renault cockpit wearing a helmet of identical configuration, reinforcing the visual and historical correspondence of the present example.

Jabouille, a central figure in Renault’s Formula One program, famously secured the marque’s first Grand Prix victory at the 1979 French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois—an event that marked the arrival of turbocharged dominance in the sport. Helmets from this era, particularly those retaining original radio systems and sponsor markings, are exceedingly scarce.

Condition:
Overall very good, with visible and appropriate signs of period use. Surface wear, light abrasions, and age-related marks throughout. Interior intact and commensurate with age. Radio cable present.

An exceptional and rare artifact from the dawn of Formula One’s turbo era, intimately connected to one of the sport’s most important technological revolutions.
