Nigel Mansell took pole position, followed by Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost. Michele Alboreto and Eddie Cheever were in the third row. Senna then took the lead and dominated the race, eventually finishing 33 seconds ahead of Nelson Piquet. Michele Alboreto finished third.
